The Han

Working with landscaper Gilead Michaeli of Xerophyte Landscapes in Israel, I helped to build a lush garden at a desert guesthouse.  The Chan ha Shayarot, near Sde Boker, hired us to install garden in the center courtyard of their caravan area.  The soil we started with was bone-dry, compacted and chalky.  We created an extensive system of pathways and a large central patio with limestone, installed a network of water-wise drip irrigation, and planted heavily with desert-appropriate species.  Each caravan had its own herb garden, grapevine, and fruit tree.

The before/after pictures say it all:

Before - The Han

Midway - the Han

After - The Han
